Lake House Dreams

Funny Story…when I very first moved to Maine, I had some friends tell me we were going to head to their grandmother’s camp.  Being a “flat lander”…I automatically assumed that she owned some kind of fantastic summer camp…the kind where kids come for a week during the year and play and there are counselors and programs..that kind.  I learned (quickly) that it meant a small house, usually on a lake…a little getaway.  Sometimes year round, usually seasonal.  And chances are, if you have lived in Maine for generations, you might just have a camp tucked into your family on one side or the other.

Since then, I always thought it would be fun to have the same.  But it was almost like window shopping to me; I don’t have to buy to be fulfilled; sometimes I just love to look and be inspired and have fun with the dream.

But this summer…oh, this summer!  I’ve been searching for property like this could be a real possibility someday. I’ve been a tad bit obsessed.  But I’ve felt incredibly guilty at the same time, because so much of the world is in pain…while I’m dreaming of something more than the perfectly good thing I have.  I think I pinpointed it though.  I have seen my boys thrive this summer.  I think they would stay in the lake all day, given the chance.  Ryan took kayaking lessons at summer camp.  They are all turning into little fishes.  The good?  That means they aren’t dependent on technology, which they sometimes feel like they should be.   When they are in nature, they don’t have to turn to minecraft.  It’s hard to pull them away from the fresh air.  Me as well!   It’s a worshipful experience for me, being in nature. I want to give my children every good thing while the world feels a little shaky…adventure and water and the woods being just a few.

Kink in the plans?  We can’t afford a camp.  LOL.  But maybe someday?  I found what I would love; I can’t stop thinking about it.  It’s decorated in my mind, of course.  It’s this little 800 square foot thing, on over an acre of property.  That’s approx. 50,000 more square feet for my children to run and play and explore than what is currently their tiny backyard. That, plus a 3 mile lake at their beck and call.

Isn’t it DARLING?  Tell me that’s not darling.  And that darling is driving me to distraction. It’s $130000.  I need to act on a $130000 idea. 🙂  Suggestions welcome!

Baxter State Park, Maine, 163 Design CompanyWe’d play and explore from dawn to dusk.  And if we could make it year round (website doesn’t say if it’s year round or not), we’d visit in the winter and cross country ski.  And we’d open it up to friends and family to come and stay, because having something like that would be too good not to share!

I fully realize that a camp would be unneccesary…but at the same time it would be such an amazing legacy to leave to my kiddos, and their kiddos…

What do you get a charge from?  Do you have a fun little dream tucked away?

Now that I live in LA 130000 sounds like a steal!! When I was a kid my grandparents had a loft style cabin in the woods up north. It didn’t even have a phone. Our whole family (aunts, uncles and cousins) used to all go up there mostly during the winter since my mom’s side was big into snow mobiling. (My grandpa owned his own excevating company so they lived really well) I remember loving to go up there and have adventures with my cousins. I think it’s awesome that the boys love being outdoors! They’ll appreciate that when they’re older! When I was a kid we spent so much time outside and honestly I’m so thankful because I got to be a kid. Kids these days are just missing out. 🙂 I feel like an old lady when I say that but I worked my imagination to the bone and I loved my epic childhood!
At this point in my life I’m dreaming for a house in general but I have a feeling that won’t be happening because I refuse to pay LA prices and I don’t want Danny to commute for hours if we owned a home outside the city. So I’m transferring my dreams into Being happy as long as I have a parking space that’s alllllll ours. 🙂

Jen, I have been dreaming of a beach house. We recently stayed with some of my husbands relatives who own a beach house. My husband, who has not been as crazy about the ocean as I have, said to me while we were we were on a walk that ” he could get used to this”. So now I’m totally trying to figure out how to save up and what we would need for retirement and if the business would do well on the coast, etc. * Sigh*

    Jen,

I’ve been dreaming of making additions to our little home. A second story and pretty up the front. I also want to build a guest home on the back lot, maybe with an office/studio, with green grass and garden all around it. I know we don’t NEED all that space, especially since we are done having kids, but I would love a lot of room for when they and their families visit an my grandkids can play. Like Henry’s grandparents house. It would also help our older rambler fit into the neighborhood better. 🙂 Awww…dreaming.

My dream is to be is some form of nature again, 100 + degrees of dry cactus drought does not suit me at all… But I know how very blessed we are, exactly where we are, and I give thanks and remind myself often of that. This camp is beautiful. What lake is it on?

Actually Jen I just looked up that beautiful little place on realtor.com and it is almost Exactly straight across from where our camp was. Right near there they have nearly 2 acre for sale with water access (same lake) for under 20k… That would be a really good step towards the perfect camp someday, and a great private tenting location in the meantime 😉 I dream of the loons calling all night on that lake… It was amazing

I grew up on a lake and I didn’t know how good I had it until I moved! I miss it every single day! My heart especially aches for it during the summers! I’m extremely thankful my parents gave me that luxury as a kid. So many amazing memories from cross country skiing, ice hockey, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, boating, tubing, or just floating out there in the sun with my sister! Definitely a slice of heaven 🙂 Love your blog’s layout and design btw!
